How Often Should You Upgrade Your iPhone? An Experiment

1. It’s slower than a game of chess

It is a nightmare to turn on your smartphone and then have to wait an eternity for it to start. Or what about when the device takes a long time to respond to after a call? If you move from WhatsApp to Facebook and it feels like you’re watching grass grow, don’t think about it anymore and get a new mobile phone right now.

How are phone systems advancing?

Phone systems have advanced at the same pace as computers over the last decade. Imagine running your business on computer equipment that is 10 or 15 years old? Business owners researching current market trends will quickly recognize that replacing an outdated phone system with a hosted phone system is one of the few ways to improve quality and future proof your business.

With a hosted solution, it is unnecessary to review and upgrade your system on a regular basis — as the provider will take care of this for you.

4. You’re out of storage

If you’ve run out of space on your device it doesn’t mean you should run to the mall and buy a new smartphone. If you’ve run out of storage, you can save photos, videos, or install more apps by expanding the device’s internal memory or simply by cleaning and deleting files and applications you don’t use or need.

Can I get software updates?

Phone manufacturers regularly publish software updates that include new features but also address security vulnerabilities, so it’s important to stay on top of installing them. A good rule of thumb is to consider an upgrade when you can no longer get software updates.

Apple phones get software updates for five to six years. (Apple’s iOS 15 software, arriving this fall, will be compatible with phones back to the iPhone 6S from 2015.) Android devices get them for a shorter period — about two to three years.

Although security updates are important, it may not be practical for some people to upgrade as soon as software updates run out, said Sinan Eren, an executive at the security firm Barracuda Networks. In countries like Turkey, various taxes can add up to a markup of about 100 percent on electronics, he said, meaning customers have an economic incentive to hold on to a device for longer than five years.

“It’s a tough situation and therefore a luxury to even think about security,” Mr. Eren said.

There are ways to work around this problem. Anti-malware apps, like Malwarebytes, may keep older Android phones running safely just a little longer. Apple phones can also run apps like 1Blocker, which blocks malicious ads from loading on websites.
