Parchment vs. wax paper
Waxed paper (or wax paper) and parchment paper are both coated papers. The difference is in their coatings. Parchment paper — which is available bleached and unbleached — is coated with silicone, while wax paper is coated in, you guessed it, wax. Soybean or paraffin wax, to be precise.
Their coatings give them different uses. Parchment paper’s silicone coating makes it heat-resistant and nonstick. Line baking pans with this paper wonder and food won’t stick to the pan. This trick can’t be duplicated with wax paper because the wax will melt, which makes it useless as a nonstick barrier and ruins whatever you’re cooking.
Wax paper’s best use is lining countertops and tables before rolling out pie crusts or kneading bread, to prevent a mess. Wax paper can also be used to wrap food for cold storage or even line a pan for making something like fudge. Putting a piece of wax paper in between items you’re freezing will also prevent them from sticking together.
So, to sum it up, parchment paper is for hot applications and wax paper is for cold.
What is the best freezer paper?
While parchment paper can do anything wax paper can, it’s more expensive. The main difference between papers is their respective coatings. Parchment paper is coated with silicone to give it a nonstick, heat-resistant surface, and waxed paper is coated with a soybean or paraffin wax.
Is freezer paper toxic?

2. Parchment paper
Parchment paper same as the wax paper is coated. The difference is in the coating. This one is coated with silicone and wax paper is coated with paraffin or soybean wax.
You should use parchment paper when you are baking because the silicone coat is heat resistant and the food won’t stick to the dish. Wax paper is not the same as parchment paper because it can easily burn. And therefore it should not be used for baking.

4. Butter paper
Butter paper is also known as sandwich paper. Because it doesn’t have a non-stick surface it can’t be used for baking.
However, it’s good for packaging moist food. Or protecting the chopping board when you are preparing meat, fish, onion, or other foods that can mess up it up.
5. Silpat paper
Silpat paper is made of silicone and is used mainly for baking or even cooking because of its non-stick surface. It’s reusable and flexible in high temperatures.
You can also use it for rolling dough, making candies, or kneading dough. And because of its non-stick surface, you don’t need to use any greasing.
So you can use it as a substitute for waxed paper but only for lining the trays and cake pans, not for wrapping food. It’s more expensive and you will have to buy different sizes because you can’t cut them like you cut waxed paper.
6. Paper bag
Paper bags are good for wrapping and storing food. They have low burning temperatures so you should not use them for baking.
Also, because of its eco-friendly material, it can be recycled. If you don’t have other options you can use them but never for baking in the oven you could start a fire.
7. Plastic wrap
Plastic wrap is a thin plastic film used for food packing and storage in the freezer. It should not be used for baking. Otherwise, the plastic can melt into the food. Thus, it’s a good substitute for waxed paper but only for storage.
8. Silicone rubber pads
Silicone rubber pads are great if you want to bake something. You can make it in different sizes and forms. They can be used at a high temperature, and they are reusable, so that makes them a good waxed paper substitute.
9. Oil, butter, or flour
Don’t have any of this in your kitchen, well here is something that can be found in any kitchen. And that’s oil, butter, or flour, some people are using the cooking spray. If you don’t have it spread the oil with a kitchen towel or paper.
If you want to prevent the dough from sticking use flour on your baking pan. It can work sometimes but not always. Butter is another option for greasing the pan, and then sprinkle a bit of flour to stick it to the grease. It all depends on your recipe and taste.
10. Tracing paper
Tracing paper is made from regular paper treated with chemicals to break its wood fibers. It’s transparent and used to trace an image or drawing.
If you have it you can use it in your kitchen. It’s smooth but not heat resistant. Thus, it can be used for lining the baking tray or a pan. It’s not the best choice. But it can be useful.
Other Substitutions for Parchment Paper
Aluminum foil is a common household item, so chances are it is your best bet for a lining solution if you are out of parchment paper and will eliminate an unnecessary trip to the store.
However, if you happen to be out of both parchment paper and aluminum foil, the following are some other lining alternatives you can use:
Wax paper is like parchment paper in that it is thinly coated on both sides, making it water-resistant and non-stick. However, wax paper is not heat-resistant and is, therefore, not suitable for use for baking or any other cooking that involves heat.
Because of this, some of the more common uses for wax paper include lining countertops to protect them from messes and wrapping foods like sandwiches.
Silpat Baking Mat
Silpat baking mats are entirely made of silicone, making them not only flexible but also heat-resistant and non-stick. Unlike parchment paper, aluminum foil, and wax paper, however, these baking mats usually come in set sizes, meaning they cannot be adjusted to fit different cooking projects like other lining options.
Also, Silpat baking mats harder to come by and are much more expensive than parchment paper. However, as a benefit, they can be cleaned and reused, which means they can last for many years.
Finally, if you are out of lining options, you can never go wrong with traditional grease. Grease your baking pans with your preferred cooking oil, like olive oil, coconut oil, or vegetable oil.
Pour a bit of the oil in the baking sheet or pan and spread the oil around using a folded paper towel. Butter also works!
If you are baking, it is also recommended to sprinkle a little bit of flour on top of the grease, enough so that it sticks to the grease easily and evenly. Shake off any excess flour.
Foil vs. parchment paper
Foil is basically very thin aluminum. Many people use it to line cooking dishes for easier cleanup, which is a great trick, but foil has no nonstick properties, unlike parchment paper. You may end up with a little piece of foil stuck to the bottom of your roasted potatoes or cookies.
Also, research by the International Journal of Electrochemical Science found that small amounts of aluminum may leach into food during the cooking process. Like with wax paper, if there is heat your best bet is parchment paper.
Some people line their ovens with foil to prevent messes. This is a big no-no, too. It can damage your oven in several different ways. It can also prevent proper air circulation, which can alter how your food cooks.
Foil still has its uses, though. Use it to:
